Barley (Hordeum Vulgare) extract

Hordeum Vulgare

Barley (Hordeum Vulgare) was one of the first cereal grains to be cultivated by humans, dating back over four thousand years. Historically, the plant species were used to treat blood, skin, and liver disorders by the Ancient Greeks and were eaten by Roman gladiators for strength and stamina. However, only during the last century has barley grass been recognized for its nutritional value and health benefits.

Barley contains a large variety of vitamins, including beta carotene (provitamin A), thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (B2), pyridoxine (B6), cobalamins (B12), pantothenic acid (B5), and folic acid (B9), which all play an essential role in dermal cells metabolism and necessary for normal functioning. In addition, Hordeum Vulgare is packed full of many minerals, including potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus, and magnesium, which are vital for the health of the skin.

Furthermore, barley grass contains essential amino acids, which are the building blocks for collagen and elastin. In addition, Hordeum Vulgare extract showed noticeable antioxidant activity, protecting skin from reactive oxygen species responsible for damaging cell membranes and DNA and promoting aging and inflammation. Rich in beta-glucan oligosaccharide, Barley seed extract leaves a probiotic effect, selectively nourishing beneficial bacteria and improving microbiota balance. Hordeum Vulgare seeds also contain Phytic acid that exfoliates dull and dead keratinocytes and reduces hyperpigmentation and dark spots.
