Chrysin is a flavonoid found in honey, propolis, and many medicinal and edible plants (passionfruit, carrot, mushroom, and chamomile) with multiple beneficial effects on the skin, including an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification effects. Like other flavonoids, it scavenges free radicals, protecting skin cell membranes and DNA from oxidative stress and UV-induced damage.

Chrysin soothes irritation and serves as a remedy for many skin conditions, including atopic dermatitis, thanks to its anti-inflammatory action. It also boosts detoxification enzymes (UGTs or UDP-glucuronosyltransferases) production, responsible for binding and eliminating toxins from the body.

Treatment of dark circles under the eyes

The detoxifying action of Chrysin is advantageous in undereye dark circles treatment. Bilirubin is typically eliminated via conjugation with glucuronic acid thanks to a series of enzymes: the UDP glucuronosyl transferases, more usually known as UGTs. When the UGTs are ineffective, bilirubin accumulates, and the skin around the eyes changes color.

Increasing the natural ability to eliminate bilirubin, UGTs are the perfect targets in dermal tissue to obtain enhanced elimination of the biliverdin/bilirubin pigments locally deposited around the eyes. Chrysin naturally stimulates UGT synthesis and boosts the elimination of locally accumulated bilirubin (pigments) while soothing inflammation caused by excess iron-containing proteins.
