Hydrolyzed Collagen

Collagen is the primary structural protein of skin tissue. Hydrolyzed Collagen is a pure protein hydrolyzate produced enzymatically (other hydrolyzation methods also possible including thermal) under controlled conditions to ensure the lowest possible odor and ash. As an ingredient closely related to skin, hydrolyzate is naturally skin-compatible and has, historically, been considered the preferred choice for skin conditioning.

The use of hydrolyzed collagen is not restricted to skincare alone, for experience has shown that these proteins are, in fact, substantive to hair as well. It forms a protective barrier for the skin and hair. As a result, hydrolyzed collagen can improve both hair manageability and skin smoothness.

In addition, hydrolyzed collagen has unique water-binding and texturizing properties, which enable it to bind to the water held by the hair shaft. This behavior substantially increases the hair's capacity for water retention, the effects of which give hair more flexibility, a better body, and improved manageability.

Because the product appears to lessen the stripping effects some surfactants cause, Hydrolyzed Collagen can help reduce the subsequent defatting that may occur. As a result, it is highly recommended for shampoos, facial cleansers, body shampoos, and other surfactant systems, including detergent preparations like dishwashing liquids. It may also be used as a conditioner in cream rinses and hair-setting lotions.

Ingredient products

Different types of Hydrolyzed Collagens are freely soluble in water and as a consequence of their substantivity and film-forming properties can impart the following benefits to the hair and skin. Extensive studies on enzyme hydrolyzed proteins have shown substantivity to the hair from both shampoos and conditioners and excellent product and fragrance stability with a wide range of formulations.

Benefits to the Hair

They have the ability to improve the manageability (hand) and body of the hair while enhancing its gloss and texture. They will coat and seal hair that has been damaged (by bleaching, waving, dying, brushing, etc.), improving its feel, and helping to restore the hair to normalcy. Hydrolyzed Collagen has moisture-retentive properties which are superior to those of the hair and they can increase the ability of the hair to retain moisture. This, in turn, will enhance the healthy appearance of the hair.

Benefits to the Skin

Hydrolyzed Collagen provides a protective colloid effect and forms a moisture-retentive, skin-smoothing film on the surface of the skin. This will assist the skin in retaining moisture. They help combat the drying effect that detergents and soap have on the skin, which can lead to chapping and irritation. Hydrolyzed Collagen may also act as a counterirritant to help protect the skin from environmental pollutants and irritants.
