Salicin is made from the bark of various willow (Salix L.) species. Salicin is a β-glucoside that is metabolized in the gastrointestinal tract to salicylic acid.

In this form, it has anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving, as well as antipyretic properties. Salicin can also be used for cosmetic products as well as in biochemical tests for differentiating strains of bacteria.
