Hydrolyzed Oats

Avena sativa - green oats

The history of oats appears to date back to the Bronze Age 1500-500 BC with evidence of this cultivated grain found in caves in Switzerland, although many dispute whether it was merely just a grass weed seed.  Alexander the Great apparently fed his horse only oats as he believed it made the horse run faster.

Several different varieties of oats are available, which come from the Grasses family, with the most common species being the white oat, Avena sativa.  In Ayurvedic medicine, an extract of oats was used to treat opium addiction.  The cosmetic industry also uses oats or extracts thereof in many beauty products as it possesses excellent soothing properties for the skin.  It can be found in soaps, cleansers, moisturizers, etc.

Oats are an excellent source of manganese and selenium – which may assist in building strong bones and promoting a healthier immune system; phosphorous; B  Group Vitamins; magnesium; zinc, and dietary fiber.  They also contain phytochemicals that perform many health-promoting functions within the body.  In particular, oats contain a phytochemical that no other cereal grain has called avenanthramides, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Hydrolyzed oats contain approximately 19 -23% oligosaccharides and approximately 3% protein. Consisting in 2-10 long-chain oligosaccharides (Maltoses), this natural ingredient retains significantly more moisture at all humidities, gaining up to 50% more at low relative humidity —a time when added water is most needed. In vivo test results is an ideal confirmation of the excellent moisturizing potential of Hydrolyzed oats.
