Menthyl Lactate is an ester of natural menthol and lactic acid, a highly effective and widely colorless liquid mainly used as a cooling agent. It provides a quick cooling and long-lasting refreshing feeling with a weak chamomile-minty odor.

It is a food-grade ingredient used as a flavoring agent. So, Menthyl Lactate is safe for the skin with several beneficial effects, including skin conditioning, wound healing accelerator, insect repellent, and UV protection. However, it has mild action compared to menthol, which has irritation potential.

Thanks to the water-binding ability of the lactic acid part, Menthyl Lactate also acts like an NMF, promoting skin hydration. In addition, it stimulates cell migration and improves skin renewal rate. Menthyl Lactate is stable in a wide range of pH and is used in numerous skin, lip, and hair care formulations.
